Huge Bipartisan Wins in 2022 |
Hi Friend, There’s something of a Dickensian “Christmas Carol” element to No Labels’ story here at the end of 2022—except that, far from portending anything ominous, our past, present, and future all appear incredibly bright. We’re all so grateful to those who support our movement, and we hope you’ll take this moment to appreciate our recent achievements, to celebrate those working so hard behind the scenes to push us forward, and to gear up for the exciting things we have planned for 2023. First, we want to make you aware of a huge No Labels accomplishment that got lost in the deluge of news at the end of the year. As you likely know, our organization’s honorary co-chairs, Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joe Manchin (D-WV), have been working for more than a year to ensure that the travesty of January 6, 2021 never happens again. The core of their efforts centered on a bill, the Electoral Count Act, designed to update a law from 1887 to ensure that whatever ambiguity existed about the legislative branch’s role ahead of the last presidential election was stamped out entirely. We’re so proud and pleased to be able to report that, after months and months of negotiation, Sens. Collins and Manchin were able to usher this legislation through both houses of Congress and onto the president’s desk. This is a HUGE bipartisan win for No Labels—and one I’m sure will leave our supporters sleeping more soundly at night. Never again will anyone be under any realistic delusion that Congress or the vice president can ignore voters and simply anoint the winner of a national election. All our work in 2022 has really paid off. Which brings us to our present—namely the people you sometimes see but often don’t see working hard to build this movement each and every day. Our movement is fueled by a team of (mostly) young people who are doing something very brave: They’re refusing to be defined by ideological blinders that steer people to vilify the “other” side. It’s easy, after all, to join the progressive tribe or the conservative tribe—to send nasty zingers on social media, or to speak down to people who simply view politics in a different way. But as you’ll see in the picture below of the people who really fuel our progress, many among the nation’s younger generations simply want government to solve problems. Thanks to all our supporters, we’re able to give this devoted core of No Labels staffers opportunities to make this mission their work. Seeing their determination should make all of us proud and grateful. |

Now, to the future. As you likely know, No Labels is operating on a whole range of fronts. As illustrated by our partnership with Sens. Collins and Manchin, with the Problem Solvers Caucus, and with our bicameral meetings, we’re deeply involved in what’s happening on Capitol Hill. As you likely understand from our efforts to build our outreach to the sorts of voters who comprise the “frustrated majority,” we’re continually building our ability to reach the grassroots, something which will be key if we are compelled to draw on our Insurance Policy for 2024. But we’re also building the movement from the top—and that’s why we want to make sure you join us for what is sure to be a special and memorable online event when we install Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. as National No Labels Co-Chair on Sunday, January 22nd at 5 PM. |
Dr. Chavis, the iconic figure who served as youth coordinator to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and who remains one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most revered figures, has agreed to join Sen. Joe Lieberman and Gov. Larry Hogan leading our movement. Everyone here is simply thrilled about his deepening involvement because his career reflects exactly what we want No Labels to become—a force for good that changes Washington and America for the long term. This is just another sign of how our movement to unify the country is growing stronger, and we thank Dr. Chavis for his willingness to bring his wisdom and voice to our efforts. For all we’ve accomplished this year, 2023 promises to be even more exciting. We thank all our supporters for their belief in what we’re doing. Our country still holds so much promise, and we can’t let the impulse to fight rather than fix hold us back. We’re determined to steer the country back toward problem solving. And together, we’re confident the future can be brighter than ever. Nancy Jacobson Founder and CEO |
