Dear Friend,
This morning, Puerto Rico suffered another 6.0 magnitude earthquake, just a few days after a 6.4 magnitude quake hit the island, leaving the people and infrastructure devastated once again.
Buildings on the southern part of the island have been completely flattened. Homes have been damaged beyond repair. Schools on the island have collapsed, and with continued earthquakes, people are fearful that additional schools, which have already been inspected and have suffered severe damage, will eventually collapse as well. And the already fragile power grid continues to shut off after these massive quakes, leaving the people of Puerto Rico without power.
Students and educators don’t know when they will be able to return to their schools as they wait for them to be determined structurally safe to attend.
The people of Puerto Rico are once again feeling helpless after a major natural disaster has struck their home, and they need us. Can you help?
Our union family in Puerto Rico, the Asociación de Maestros de Puerto Rico, has been working around the clock to check in with our members, their families, students and communities during these desperate times. And as we write this, our executive vice president, Evelyn DeJesus, is in Puerto Rico to help with providing first-aid kits, Operation Agua water filters, solar-powered lights and other necessary supplies.
Will you make a donation today to help us provide these desperately needed resources to the people of Puerto Rico?
The people of the island need us now more than ever. They are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria; and these recent earthquakes have undone many of the repairs made in the last two years.
We were there after the hurricane, sending in AFT nurses from across the country to help perform medical checks; and we started Operation Agua, which helped provide more than 100,000 Kohler water filters so the people of Puerto Rico could have reliable sources of safe drinking water.
Please consider contributing today so that we can be there for Puerto Rico now.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten, AFT President
Evelyn DeJesus, AFT Executive Vice President
