Rise Against Hunger
Catastrophic flooding in Somalia displaces families

In the normally-arid region of Saylac in Somalia, the rains came down in an unrelenting torrent. An area already prone to food insecurity, plagued by recurring droughts and unsettled by recent conflict, the catastrophic flooding that occurred at the end of the year threatened to send the community to the brink of famine. Rain waters rushed through homes so rapidly that families were forced to flee for higher ground, helpless to watch their belongings and, in many cases, their livelihoods wash away. In a region dependent on agriculture, the flooding has devastated their very means of survival. At the heart of this struggle, an estimated 1 million children under the age of five are likely to be acutely malnourished.
