Dear John,

This year has served as a vivid reminder that the demand for fundamental human rights and freedom is strong and getting stronger.

From Mariupol to Managua, from Kabul to Kigali, from Taipei to Tehran, we have witnessed innumerable acts of bravery and defiance on behalf of freedom and against authoritarian aggression.

With your help, Freedom House will continue to identify threats to freedom, spur action to counter those threats, and support activists working to defend and expand freedom.

Below you'll find some of Freedom House’s most impactful activities from the last year. Together, we have confronted authoritarians, supported fundamental freedoms, and protected human rights defenders. Our cause is far from hopeless, and I am heartened by the resilience of activists demanding democracy around the world. When people find themselves targeted for their activism, their journalism, their free expression, or their beliefs, Freedom House stands ready to help keep them safe.

Please continue to stand with these brave activists by making a financial contribution to Freedom House today.

***In 2022, Freedom House supported activists working to defend and expand freedom***

Over the past year, Freedom House has supported more than 1,500 activists, organizations, journalists, and survivors of persecution across 101 countries. They include brave individuals fighting for fundamental rights and democracy, as well as those persecuted for their religious beliefs or for their work to defend and advance LGBTQI+ rights.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Freedom House's partners have provided over 4,000 legal consultations to Ukrainian journalists and victims of Russian war crimes. Our reports and in-depth analysis on the most urgent issues caused by Russia’s invasion garnered over 3 million unique views from Ukrainian and international audiences. With our partners, Freedom House collected and documented evidence of over 2,000 war crimes and engaged Ukrainian prosecutors and law enforcement in high-profile investigations to ensure perpetrators are held accountable.

In 2023, Freedom House will publish the 50th edition of its landmark annual survey Freedom in the World—the oldest and most trusted report of its kind. The report’s most significant impact is in its ability to drive the global discussion on the health of democracy—its accessibility and influence are unmatched, as it serves as a critical resource for government officials, human rights activists, businesses, leading think tanks, academics and the press. In the past year, Freedom in the World has been cited by hundreds of media outlets across 72 countries, and referenced by President Biden, Secretary of State Blinken, former President George W. Bush, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, and even Prince Harry during a speech before the United Nations General Assembly.

Our newest tool, the China Dissent Monitor was created in response to the information gap resulting from media restrictions and risks associated with collecting information about dissent and protest in China. The monitor captures offline collective action in public spaces, as we’ve seen in the past several weeks, as well as less public and online dissent. As documented in our Beijing’s Global Media Influence report, the CCP has expanded their global media footprint and their sophisticated and coercive tactics to shape media narratives and suppress critical reporting, threatening press freedom.

***In 2022, Freedom House spurred action to counter authoritarianism***

Freedom House research paves the way for consequential decisions, such as which countries are democratic enough to qualify for US government assistance, or where financial firms and multinational corporations invest. Our reports are found in high school classrooms and university seminars, helping to shape the next generation of democratic citizens.

President Biden hosted the Summit for Democracy to connect thought leaders and address issues facing global democracy. During this Summit, Freedom House and the prodemocracy community were propelled to action and attendees collaborated on next steps to address these challenges, resulting in the Year of Action. As part of this, Freedom House partnered with the US government to brief hundreds of mayors and municipal leaders from around the world on the global decline of democracy and how we can partner to reverse it

Defend Democracy, Champion Freedom.
