Since 2012, Avenir Suisse has been comparing the state of freedoms in the cantons using the Avenir Suisse Freedom Index, an interactive online tool. In this year’s survey, the trio of Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, Liechtenstein, and Aargau retained their top spots.
This year’s Avenir Suisse Freedom Index includes a special evaluation focusing on the Central Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Lucerne, and Zug. The analysis shows that Central Switzerland is more restrictive than other cantons when it comes to civil liberties. In the economic sphere, on the other hand, the region excels with moderate fiscal capacity utilization and a low fiscal burden.

Although, there have been no tectonic shifts in the nationwide rankings in the latest edition of the freedom index, one thing in particular stands out in this year's survey: Cantons that perform well with regard to civil liberties struggle when it comes to economic liberties. Not Out of the Woods Yet The Federal Council recently announced that the security of Switzerland’s s electricity supply would not be seriously threatened in the winter of 2022/23. The situation could still cloud over again because of outages at multiple French nuclear power plants or a protracted period of very cold weather. Nevertheless, Europe’s gas storage facilities are full, and despite the dry summer, the levels of water in Switzerland’s pumped-storage reservoirs are just about at average level. The situation is better than one might have expected at the beginning of fall. Does this mean we’re out of the woods?
Cautious Approach Switzerland is considered one of the most globalized countries in the world: in 2019, it landed in second place in ETH Zurich’s Globalization Index ranking. The index looks at the economic, social, and political dimensions. The latter two include the dissemination of information, ideas, perceptions, and people.
