Have your say on East Midlands devolution

devolution consultation

It?s not too late to take part in public consultation about devolution for Nottingham, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire which ends on 9th January.

The devolution deal with government, which would create a new Combined County Authority, offers the region a package of new powers and funding worth ?1.14 billion, or??38 million?a year over the next 30 years.

Benefits of devolution include more local investment, economic growth, more and better-quality housing and jobs, transport, skills training, and a greener environment.

Census 2021 household type & size data released

Area specific Census 2021 data was released in November, providing insight into household type and size as well as other household indicators including age, gender and deprivation. Data on ethnicity was also released later in the month.

In Nottingham households with elders fell by 1.6% with the steepest falls in Leen Valley and Clifton East wards. 65.9% of people in Nottingham are White, a fall from 71.5% ten years previously.

Provisional data on housing is set to be released on 5th January.


English Housing Survey headlines published

The English Housing Survey 2020-21 headline report was published last week revealing latest statistics for main housing sectors including costs and affordability, housing history, future aspirations, conditions and energy efficiency. Notable findings include:

  • Social housing recorded the highest level of loneliness among residents at 17%
  • Internet access for residents of Private Rented Sector and owner occupied housing was very high at 95% and 96% respectively, with social housing residents lagging behind at 84% despite some growth in this area
  • Only 1.6% of owner occupiers moved in 2020-21 compared with 13.8% in the PRS and 3.2% in social housing.

New flats in Clifton pay tribute to local soldier

Kieron Hill Court

New flats have been built on the former Southchurch garages site in Clifton and have been named after popular soldier Kieron Hill who tragically died whilst in active service in Afghanistan 13 years ago.?

The 36 one-bedroom apartments will go to people on Nottingham?s council house waiting list. Nottingham City Council has worked with Nottingham City Homes and construction partner GEDA to build these new homes, which are the latest in the Building a Better Nottingham developments in the city. Housing 21 scoops UK Housing Award

Housing 21  UKHA

Housing 21 has won the Best Older People?s Landlord at the UK Housing Awards for the second time in 3 years.

The judging panel said the social housing provider ?raised the benchmark for older people?s housing? and praised the social housing provider?s Tenancy Gurus initiative which assists residents with financial guidance, providing on-site managers with the tools and training to help residents sustain their tenancies. Housing 21 last scooped the prestigious award in 2020.?

Metropolitan to expand homelessness services

Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing are expanding homelessness services to combat rough sleeping in partnership with Nottingham City Council and Spelthorne Council who were both successful in bids to the government?s Rough Sleeping Accommodation Programme and will utilise Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing to deliver services.

The funding will boost joint efforts to tackle rough sleeping and fund several initiatives to prevent homelessness, addressing housing insecurity and its underlying issues. Click here to read more


Gas-free homes are coming to Bilborough

Nottingham Community Housing Association have started work to build 50 affordable energy efficient homes off College Way in Bilborough.?

The affordable rent and shared ownership homes will be a mix of 2 and 3 bedroom properties, including bungalows to support the housing needs of the area, and will help residents keep fuel bills low thanks to a special focus on gas-free energy efficiency measures.

NCHA are working in partnership with Nottingham City Council, Homes England and Mercer Building to deliver the project, designed by in-house Pelham Architects. Read more here

Landlords make great strides in energy efficiency

Well done to Nottingham?s private rented and social housing landlords who have demonstrated a commitment to improving energy efficiency in the homes they rent.

The Q3 2022 government release of Energy Performance Certificate ratings showed 59% of Nottingham?s private rented homes and 52% of social rented had EPCs rated A-C, compared with just 40% of owner occupied homes.

Nottingham has also improved its progress comparative to other areas of the UK. View the latest release here

Warm Spaces Community Venues

Many residents may be struggling this winter?to deal with increasing household bills, as the cost-of-living crisis continues, and?the days become colder.

Nottingham City?Council, its partners and community and voluntary?organisations,?have opened up a number of buildings as warm spaces for any resident to freely access and stay warm during their opening hours. These welcoming spaces offer somewhere residents can keep warm and meet other people with some offering refreshments and information on energy bill reduction and support.

Reducing your boiler flow temperature saves ??

Do you have a combi boiler? If so why not take part in the Money Saving Boiler Challenge and cut the cost of your gas bill! By adjusting your boiler flow temperature to 60 degrees you could save money and this without reducing the temperature in your home.

Government is suggesting people over 65 or with pre-existing health conditions may want to set a slightly higher flow temperature to ensure their homes get up to temperature quickly enough.

Winter support for rough sleepers

Recent freezing cold weather saw the activation of additional emergency shelter measures for rough sleepers under the council?s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, which is automatically activated on nights where the temperature reaches zero degrees or lower.

Nottingham City Council and its partners including local homelessness charities Framework and Emmanuel House offer specific support and accommodation services for rough sleepers all year round, which is stepped up between October & April when a winter shelter is operational.

Nottingham rallies to help homeless at Christmas

Kind seasonal gestures for those in need have been widely demonstrated in Nottingham.

A 9-year old Kimberley schoolgirl independently collected items to donate to Emmanuel House support centre, while Nottingham City Homes have received a host of donations to its toy appeal, including a huge haul of goodies from Trent Vineyard, to make sure all children in its temporary accommodation receive a gift.

Nottingham City Homes also took families in temporary accommodation to see the brilliant Dick Whittington pantomime after a generous donation of 300 tickets from Nottingham Playhouse. Read their post about it?here

These are just a few examples of wonderful gestures being made by local people and organisations this Christmas.

Nottingham leads UK city house price growth

According to the ONS UK Housing Price Index the average price of a home in Nottingham in October was??196,964

This is a monthly increase of 2.8% and yearly increase of 15.7% with terraced and semi detached houses seeing the strongest growth. The annual increase is higher than that of the county (+14.2%), region (+13.9%) and country (+13.2%), although in real terms it is still? much cheaper to buy a house in the city than these wider areas. Zoopla's own UK House Price Index monthly report, published today, also illustrates high price growth in Nottingham, outstripping that of all other UK cities. The full report does however note a decline in market activity.


PRS rents in Nottingham up 12.4% in a year

Property experts Hometrack have been producing their quarterly market rental report since late 2019, which shows prices in Nottingham have risen 25% since.?

The average monthly rent price for a property in the city rose 12.4% in the year to Q3 2022, with growth remaining strong over each of the last 4 quarters. This is however weaker growth than in 6 other UK cities, with Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield all seeing higher rises. The Q3 report is available here
