Dear
friend of the Journal,
Earlier this spring, I was excited to see a job opening at Earth Island Journal. I was at the time working on my writing, adjusting to pandemic life, and despairing as the world simultaneously heats up and diminishes.

I have worked as a journalist my whole career, convinced that an informed citizenry makes for a strong democracy—but watching as the climate crisis deepens and a mass extinction looms had me feeling more than a little pessimistic. Journalism is going through its own struggles, and those few outlets that remain are not doing a good job covering the essential stories of the day.

That’s not true of the Journal, so I applied for the job. I have always appreciated the way the magazine covers a wide spectrum of environmental issues, and I was thrilled to get an offer. Now I get a chance each day to expose trouble spots that need attention, or highlight solutions to our planet’s thorniest problems.

I love being able to contribute to a community that explores the people, creatures, and ideas that make life on Earth a wonder. And I’m grateful to all the readers who make it possible. Thank you all.
