Friend,

There is a concerted backlash to the gains you have helped us make,
and to the growing power of Black and Brown communities. You've
likely noticed that this backlash is encouraged by racist state
legislatures and enabled by a regressive Supreme Court.

Right now, Black and Brown people living in the Deep South are
subjected to far-right legislative majorities taking aim at the
cornerstone of a healthy democracy: the right to vote. This coincides
with a disturbing increase in laws that revoke the fundamental rights
of Black and Brown people, women, religious minorities and the LGBTQ
community.

This is no coincidence.

Codifying hate towards marginalized groups destabilizes our democracy
and furthers the goals of anti-democratic and white nationalist
extremists. In the wake of this legal and cultural shift, white
supremacy has become more overt, more normalized and far more violent.

We must work together to dismantle systems deeply rooted in the
oppression of racial and ethnic minorities, women, the LGBTQ community
and people experiencing poverty. Right now, white supremacy is the
largest obstacle standing between us and multi-racial, inclusive
governance that allows all people to thrive. That's why our 2023
Action Plan focuses on fighting white supremacy on all fronts.

Because white supremacy is at the root of all the injustices we seek
to remedy, the SPLC will work actively and intentionally to build an
anti-racist society across our entire country. Anti-racism will serve
as an overarching goal that informs and motivates all our work over
the next five years.

To achieve our vision of a multi-racial, inclusive democracy, and
because of the historical legacy of enslavement and anti-Black racism
in the South, improving the lives of Black people in the states where
we work is a central component of our mission.

tax-deductible contribution to the SPLC, there has never been a better
time. Thanks to a special $1,000,000 Matching Gift from a generous
