My Kids' Schedules Are Wearing Me Out

“It’s 6:30 pm, and I’m headed to a local school gym for the second time,” Samm Davidson sets the scene. “I dropped one son off for basketball practice earlier and now I’m on my way to pick him up. Today also included a gymnastics class, two in-home speech lessons, an after-school program, and a partridge in a pear tree. Because life with school-aged kids is riddled with activities. Offerings are plentiful, signups are encouraged, and schedules are packed — and in my exhausted stupor I am left wondering, whatever happened to just hanging out?”

It’s a great question. Read it and see if you relate.

And yet, that’s exactly what happened for the latest letter writer to our Ask A MWLTF columnist: “I generally think of myself as an open-minded person. I’m a 68-year-old mother of two, a retired social worker, a lifelong supporter of the arts, and a strong believer in the old maxim, live and let live. People have to find the path that’s right for them, and who is anyone else to judge? These are my beliefs,” she says. “And yet, last Christmas, I found myself accused of intolerance by none other than my own daughter.” You really need to read this one.
