This has been a tumultuous year for human rights, with authoritarianism expanding like a virus and civil society organizations showing utter determination to fight it. 

The end of 2022 is as eventful as its beginning. Among the issues we have been looking at are the many questions regarding the future of Title 42, a pandemic-era policy that has prevented hundreds of thousands of protection-seeking migrants from accessing asylum. You can lean more about why this policy needs to end here. 

Also this week, WOLA’s Senior Fellow, Dr. Jo-Marie Burt, answers questions about Peru’s institutional crisis in this podcast. 

Finally, learn more about the challenges facing President Xiomana Castro as she nears her first year in office in Honduras.

• 🇺🇸  While many questions remain about the future of Title 42, what is clear is that what happens in the coming days and weeks is likely to set precedents with lasting consequences for the right, enshrined in U.S. law more than 40 years ago, to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Here are five reasons why Title 42 must end.
  

   

• 🇭🇳  President Xiomara Castro took office in Honduras nearly a year ago, promising to put the country on the road towards becoming a fully democratic state, capable of promoting the fight against violence and corruption while guaranteeing respect for human rights. • 🇻🇪 WOLA joined partner organizations in celebrating the formal resumption of negotiations between representatives of the government of Nicolás Maduro and the opposition coalition of the Unitary Platform in Venezuela. The organizations also urged the parties and the international community to prioritize agreements that guarantee compliance with human rights in this negotiation process. Read the statement here.
