John,

Our democracy is resilient, as long as we stay engaged.

We saw that engagement during the last election, when a majority of voters cast their ballots with fair maps -- some for the first time in decades. In Colorado and Michigan, voters passed redistricting reforms. In Pennsylvania, citizens proposed a fair map in court. Across the country, from North Carolina to Kansas, people spoke up in public hearings on behalf of their communities. All of this helped ensure that maps were more fair than before.

But as important as it is to stay engaged around elections, it’s even more important to stay engaged between elections. That’s because the next phase of redistricting is underway and will have consequential impacts on the 2024 elections.

Decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana to hold their 2022 midterm elections with maps that were deemed illegal by lower courts. As a result, millions of voters cast their ballots under gerrymandered maps, some of which violate the Voting Rights Act.

Communities of color were especially impacted by the Supreme Court’s failure to intervene. So while we’ve made progress, we have a lot further to go. We need to continue setting higher standards for the “fairest maps in decades” every time new maps are drawn.

I am a strong believer that progress doesn’t happen on its own. This movement is proof of that. Whether it was demanding affordable health care or paving the way for federal marriage rights, people like you have always led the way on progress. You’ve kept us marching forward, toward the promise of a better future.

We’re not there yet. But we’re a lot closer thanks to the persistence of voters, activists, and community leaders like you.

Thank you for everything you do,
Barack Obama
