Dear John,
Christmas can bring up the best memories.
It’s a time of year that often reminds us of how lucky we are and all that we take for granted.
It’s also a time to give thanks for those that help us all year round. I know people across the Scottish Borders are incredibly grateful for the huge efforts of our incredible emergency service and key workers. I want to thank them personally for all that they do, especially over Christmas when they keep working to keep us safe.
And I also want to express my gratitude to everybody in the Armed Forces who will sacrifice their Christmas breaks to serve their country. Their selfless dedication is remarkable. I appreciate all that they do for our benefit.
Finally, I want to thank all of those small businesses and workers in industries like hospitality who are putting in long shifts over the festive period. We should all remember this year to appreciate the kindness and dedication of others who make our winter break more enjoyable.
As we turn towards 2023, I have already made one resolution that I intend to keep in the new year.
One of my main resolutions is to keep fighting for a cure for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in memory of the late, great Doddie Weir.
I was really proud to campaign alongside Doddie to get more UK Government funding dedicated towards MND research. It was a real privilege to work with him on his inspirational journey towards achieving a commitment of an extra £50 million.
Doddie built an incredibly legacy by winning that funding for MND research and creating the brilliant My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
We need to make sure that legacy only grows stronger and stronger after his passing.
In January, I’m going to take part in Doddie Aid, the annual exercise event to raise funds for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation. I hope you will consider joining too, so that Doddie's proud legacy continues to flourish.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
