Dear John,

As 2022 comes to an end, it’s worth pausing to reflect on our movement to protect people and the planet. This was a year of pivotal developments.

On one hand, we saw the transition towards a strong, equitable, zero-carbon future continue to grow, providing real reason for hope. Adoption of renewable power sources like solar and wind soared, sales of electric vehicles skyrocketed, the US took historic climate action by enacting the Inflation Reduction Act and at the COP27 climate summit, countries agreed to create a loss and damage fund to protect those most vulnerable to climate impacts around the world.

On the other hand, the environmental crises confronting our planet rose to new levels. Crippling drought in the Horn of Africa, fires across North America and Europe, and unprecedented flooding in Pakistan took a vicious toll on the most vulnerable communities. The health of our water, air, and forests is declining, and major cities around the world are struggling to provide basic services to residents.

Looking back, I am energized by the wins achieved this year, but my clearest takeaway is that preventing the worst impacts of climate change will require an enormous acceleration of effort. What’s more, we must keep advocating for solutions that prioritize justice and equity so no one is left behind.

At WRI, we are eager to accelerate progress for people, nature and climate. We’re planning to make 2023 a groundbreaking year for action, working with hundreds of partners around the world to drive down greenhouse gas emissions while improving livelihoods.

But to make as big a difference as possible, we need your support, John. Donate to WRI today to help us push forward policies and scale solutions that are good for people and the planet.

All around the world, our experts are developing solutions to improve sustainability and achieve a low-carbon future. Here are just a few examples of how these approaches, powered by generous supporters like you, are delivering on-the-ground impact:

Tools for Action: Launched this year, WRI’s Systems Change Lab platform monitors more than 70 critical shifts that are needed to protect both people and the planet, measuring where change is accelerating or heading in the wrong direction, as well as the key forces driving these changes. We hope this will serve as a valuable tool to help push different systems toward their 2030 targets.

Coalitions for Change: In Sub-Saharan Africa, WRI is mobilizing finance and technical assistance for large-scale landscape restoration. Through AFR100 – a coalition of African leaders, financial institutions, and NGOs – we are working to restore 100 million hectares of deforested and degraded land by 2030 while addressing the dual challenges of poverty and climate change.

Improving access to clean water: At COP27, WRI and partners launched the African Cities Water Adaptation Fund (ACWA Fund) with the aim of channeling $5 billion towards urban water resilience solutions in 100 African cities by 2032. This coalition will enable city leaders to directly access funding and technical support to solve a range of critical water issues.

These are just a few of over a hundred initiatives WRI is implementing worldwide right now. And with your support, we can do even more.

So please, donate today to help WRI respond to current and emerging challenges.
