Always one of Health Affairs’ most-read articles, this year’s report estimates that in 2021 health care spending in the United States increased 2.7 percent to $4.3 trillion, or $12,914 per person -- a marked decline from the 10.3 percent growth in 2020.
On Tuesday, January 10, at 1:00 p.m., you are invited to join Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil, David M. Cutler, the Otto Eckstein Professor of Applied Economics at Harvard University, and M. Kate Bundorf, the J. Alexander McMahon Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy at Duke University, for a discussion of the report and the conditions that led to this drastic decline, including decreased federal government expenditures since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The article will appear in the
January 2023 issue of the journal.
The centerpiece of the Health Affairs Journal Club meeting in January
is, "Medicaid Expansion Led To Reductions In Postpartum Hospitalizations.”
The authors looked at underused longitudinal hospital data from 2010-2017 and found that Medicaid expansion was associated with a 17 percent reduction in hospitalizations during the first 60 days postpartum. They also found some evidence of a smaller decrease in hospitalizations between 61 days and six months postpartum.
On January 18, please join authors Maria W. Steenland, an assistant professor in the Department of Population Studies and Training Center of Brown University, and Laura W. Wherry, an assistant professor at New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, for a detailed discussion
of the paper’s data, methods, and policy conclusions. Health Affairs Senior Editor Leslie Erdelack will host.
As part of Health Affairs’ ongoing commitment to foster and support high-quality, forward-looking health policy and health policy researchers, our next Professional Development session will give policy professionals a leg up on ensuring that their work gets into the hands of influential colleagues, policymakers, and the media.
