This year was one of the hardest for abortion access in our country’s history. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, 18 states have had laws go into effect banning or severely limiting access to abortion for millions of people across the country. Thanks to your partnership and advocacy, abortion currently remains legal in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. We are so thankful for your support this year and we look forward to continuing the fight to protect and expand reproductive rights in our region.

2022 Regional Highlights

Maryland
In April, the Maryland General Assembly adjourned the 2022 legislative session and successfully passed the Abortion Care Access Act. PPADMV worked with Planned Parenthood of Maryland and Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC (PPMW) to provide testimony and mobilize constituents to contact their representatives. In addition, the Maryland General Assembly successfully overrode conservative Governor Larry Hogan’s attempt to veto the bill, ensuring abortion access for all Marylanders!
On May 14, you and hundreds of Marylanders showed up in Baltimore to protest the leaked Supreme Court draft decision planning to overturn Roe v. Wade, joining millions of people participating in national Rallies for Abortion Justice.
To celebrate Pride Month in June, PPADMV worked with Planned Parenthood of Maryland to connect with LGBTQIA+ Marylanders in Annapolis, Greenbelt, and Baltimore.

On June 24, Marylanders rallied in Baltimore, Annapolis, and Frederick to make their voices heard in protest against the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, upending 50 years of precedent.
The newly formed PPADMV PAC was proud to issue endorsements for pro-abortion candidates in 2022, including Governor-Elect Wes Moore. Nearly 90% of PPADMV PAC-endorsed candidates, including every endorsed County Executive and statewide candidate, won their elections. Learn more and contribute here to the PAC’s ongoing efforts to protect and expand reproductive health care in Maryland!

Washington, DC
In February, the DC Council passed the Expanding Student Access to Period Products Act of 2021, a bill championed by DC Councilmember Brooke Pinto. This bill requires all DC schools to provide free menstruation products to DC students.
In May, our worst fears came true in a leaked Supreme Court draft decision confirming plans to overturn Roe v. Wade. On May 14, hundreds of advocates joined us to protest this draft decision at the Washington Monument to rally for abortion justice!
In June, we celebrated Pride Month and partnered with Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC to attend Capitol Pride and meet with our LGBTQIA+ supporters in person for the first time since the pandemic's start.
June 24, the Supreme Court released their decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case overturning Roe v. Wade and ending our constitutional right to control our bodies and futures. Within hours, hundreds of pro-abortion protestors rallied at the steps of the Supreme Court Building demanding justice and making it clear: we will not back down.

PPADMV has been proud to work with DC Council to help advance several pieces of legislation in 2022 to protect and expand access to abortion, including increased protections for self-managed abortion, and increased protections for both patients and those who provide and assist with providing abortions in the aftermath of Dobbs. Thank you to Councilmembers Christina Henderson, Brianne Nadeau, and Robert White for their leadership on these bills!
In October, PPADMV hosted a successful event featuring reproductive health champion Councilmember Christina Henderson. Thank you to all who supported the event!
Throughout 2022, PPADMV fought for DC statehood showcasing how the lack of statehood continues to pose a threat to the future of abortion access in the District. For decades, Congress has prevented DC from using locally raised tax dollars to cover abortion care for Medicaid recipients. We will continue to fight for DC statehood in 2023!

During the 2022 elections, PPADMV proudly endorsed pro-abortion candidates running for DC offices, including longtime reproductive health care champion DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and Attorney General-Elect Brian Schwalb. Voters turned out, and champions of reproductive health care continue to hold local leadership positions. We look forward to working with Mayor Bowser, AG-Elect Schwalb, and the whole DC Council on protecting and expanding access to reproductive health care in DC.

Virginia
During the 2021 Virginia legislative session, PPADMV joined forces with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia (PPAV) to defeat several anti-abortion bills, including a 20-week abortion ban, the reinstatement of informed consent, and biased counseling. Thanks to your advocacy, all of these bills were rejected by the Virginia General Assembly.

In 2022, we faced a divided General Assembly and a vocally anti-abortion Governor. Shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision, Governor Youngkin called himself a “pro-life governor” and shared his plan to implement a 15-week abortion ban. We’re geared up and ready for a fight in 2023.
Just days after the Supreme Court’s draft decision was leaked, George Mason University (GMU) students – including PPADMV and PPAV GenAction students – and members of Pro-Choice with Heart organized a rally at GMU’s law school protesting the draft decision and Justice Alito’s formal campus appearance.
PPADMV worked with affiliates across the country including PPIA (Illinois), PPAV, and PPSAT (South Atlantic) throughout this election cycle to support states fighting against proposed abortion bans and campaigning to pass state-level constitutional abortion protections; volunteers phone-banked for Kansas, West Virginia, and Georgia.
