An especially inspiring example is Identity’s non-clinical emotional support groups called Encuentros. Rooted in Latino cultural traditions of neighbors helping neighbors through difficult times, Encuentros groups provide space for honest discussion about emotional challenges. They are facilitated by trained and trusted Latino Community Mental Health Workers (CMHWs) with support from Identity staff. Running groups for both mothers and fathers, these facilitators are natural connectors and trusted leaders in the community.
“I am a tall man and when people see me, they don’t really ask me about what I am feeling. It would be very strange if I want to talk about feelings but I’m also suffering. I didn’t have anyone to talk to and it was so lonely. Being here I feel like people listen to me and they aren’t afraid of me. They don’t run away because I am a man and that I talk about feelings."
“It is a great responsibility, and the truth is, the knowledge that you offer us or the training that you give me personally has helped me a lot to improve and I am proud to belong to this group and be like a bridge to be able to help my community.”
