CALL TO ACTION FROM MAYOR HANCOCK
As you are likely aware, nearly 1,000 asylum-seekers and migrants have arrived in Denver from Central and South America in recent weeks. Mayor Hancock has issued an emergency declaration and is asking the entire Metro Area and Front Range community to assist with sheltering, feeding, clothing and meeting other essential needs of these new arrivals, particularly as winter weather sets in. Here are several ways you can help, and more information can be found here at this link (www.denvergov.org/OEM).
If you or your organization has physical space that could be used for sheltering or temporary housing, please email [email protected]. Denver is currently utilizing two recreation centers, multiple churches and a motel to provide shelter to about 500 people per night, but the need is growing and more space is needed.
Another critical need is for staff and volunteers to cover shifts at these shelters:
Denver is now hiring 100 employees at $25-an-hour to work at the shelters. Please share the job postings on social media and with your networks. Here is a link to the general job posting, and here’s a separate link for bilingual applicants.
Here is a link to the volunteer sign-up form (even though the link indicates this is for medial and public health volunteers, it really is accepting volunteers of all kinds).
Donations of winter clothing and other items are needed. Click here for a current list of items needed. Items can be dropped off from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Iglesia Ciudad de Dios, 5255 W. Warren Ave., Denver CO 80227. The church is also seeking volunteers for two-hour shifts to help sort donations. Click here to sign up.
Several nonprofits are also supporting this effort and are accepting direct financial contributions. Here are links to those organizations: Denver Community Church
American Friends Service Committee Colorado Hosting Asylum Network
If you need any additional information, please contact Mayor Hancock deputy chief of staff Evan Dreyer at [email protected] and 720-350-8370. |

STATEMENT FROM THE SOUTH ASIAN INITIATIVE |
|
|
We are deeply disturbed by the racist and offensive videos that have surfaced this week of Aurora Ward 2 City Councilman, Steve Sundberg, who made an intentional choice to film himself stereotypically imitating South Asians, Arab Muslims, Mexicans, and other communities of color and foreign descent as
advertisements for his sports bar in 2020. The Colorado South Asian Democrats (COSAD) board calls for Councilman Sundberg’s immediate resignation. Aurora is Colorado’s most diverse city and is home to immigrants and refugees from all over the world. Any elected official, absent of party and background, who willingly engages in this type of racist behavior, no matter the context, is unfit to represent our communities. His lack of
comprehension of how his mockery affects the physiological, psychological and social well being of our communities is distressing. It’s imperative for all elected officials to have a basic sense of respect and fluency when working with communities from diverse backgrounds. It’s clear to us that Councilman Sundberg lacks these leadership qualities and will continue to be a threat to the communities we represent. This incident, coupled with the existing allegations of
sexual harassment against him, leaves no room for doubt that the best path forward for our communities is for Councilman Sundberg to immediately resign from his position.
We humbly call upon our community members, partners, and the elected officials of Aurora to join us in publicly condemning Councilman Sundberg’s behavior and to demand his resignation. COSAD will continue to work hard to ensure our
elected officials are held accountable for such disgraceful conduct.
