Dear John,
When we started showing up to planning commission meetings in 2015, we were so angry at the status quo; angry that our best places were shutting people out, angry that old racist laws were still on the books. But in some ways, we were just kids back then. Now, we are both mothers, with kids of our own. (In 2022, Sonja welcomed her second child, Blima, and Laura welcomed her first child, Freddie.)
As mothers, the anger is stronger because the stakes are higher. Unless we take bold action now, our kids might face even more extreme prices. They might be forced away from the neighborhoods they grew up in and away from opportunities. And, as terrifying as it is to think about this, they might even face housing insecurity and homelessness.
We’re not willing to let that happen. We want our kids, neighbors, and future generations to be able to afford moving to a new community to start their dream job. We want them to be able to afford to live close to their families when they’re ready to start their own. We want them to have the freedom of mobility that abundant, affordable housing allows.
This future is possible because of the YIMBY movement. It’s possible because of you. Just this past year, you’ve helped us pass landmark legislation, win historic lawsuits, and grow bigger and more powerful than ever. The YIMBY vision has never been closer than it is now.
We know that you’re passionate about creating a future where every child has access to safe affordable housing, wherever they want to live. In honor of fighting for the future in the upcoming new year, will you donate $23, $123, or $223 to support the movement?
Thank you for being a part of this fight. We look forward to building a future of abundant, affordable housing together.
From our backyards to yours,
Laura Foote and Sonja Trauss
