Hello -

Six months ago, no one was predicting Democrats would sweep Michigan and Pennsylvania and retain control of the Senate. And yet, here we are — thanks to rural voters.

A new analysis by Axios shows that in Pennsylvania, Sen.-elect John Fetterman outperformed Joe Biden's 2020 showing with rural voters by 7.2 points, while Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro did even better, outperforming the president by 15.2 points. Likewise, in Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer improved on Joe Biden's 2020 rural vote haul by 10.4 points.

Our takeaway? When Democrats speak to rural voters, county by county, about the issues that matter, we win. And we'll win again in 2024, but the work starts now. That's why I'm reaching out today. Beyond the Keystone and Wolverine states, there are numerous other examples of rural voters making the winning difference for Democrats. Just months after rejecting an anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution, rural voters helped re-elect Gov. Laura Kelly in Kansas, a state Donald Trump won in 2020.

Likewise, both Senators Mark Kelly in Arizona and Michael Bennett in Colorado outpaced Joe Biden with rural voters — as did Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada. While Cortez Masto's difference was slimmer — just 1.6 points — given how close that race was, the rural vote clearly helped put her over the top.

As you can see, One Country Project's strategy is a national one — and a recipe for success in 2023 and 2024. If this historic midterm proved one thing, it's that moving the needle even fractional amounts in rural counties can swing entire states.
