The oil industry isn't getting the last word

Dear Friend,

Despite more than 22,000 Earthjustice supporters urging it otherwise, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) formally decided to move forward with a reckless lease sale in Alaska’s Cook Inlet.

In response, Earthjustice today sued the BOEM for its failure to do right by the ecosystem and the people who depend on it.

Lease Sale 258, as it’s known, was required by the Inflation Reduction Act, but the Biden administration refused to limit the scale of the sale or establish strong environmental protections that would protect Cook Inlet’s diverse ecosystem and our climate. Its decision to offer nearly a million acres to oil companies relies on an environmental analysis that is deeply flawed and violates the National Environmental Policy Act.

In going to court, we’re fighting for the salmon, sea otters, and endangered beluga whales that call Cook Inlet home. The oil industry has spent more than a century destroying the ecosystems and climate that support these creatures, and it’s time we put a stop to it.

The administration’s choices are disappointing, but this is far from the end. Earthjustice has held the government accountable for its mistakes for more than five decades, and we’re prepared to do that again for Cook Inlet.

We’ll keep you updated when there’s more news on this lawsuit or ways for you to engage. For now, we need your help to push back on another Alaskan drilling project — the Willow project. Tell the Bureau of Land Management not to move forward with the disastrous drilling plan.
