That’s exactly what residents of Jackson, Baltimore, Flint and many more communities have had to do – especially Black, Indigenous and other communities of color. They are not alone. More and more communities will have to deal with failing water systems because our aging infrastructure is unprepared for the climate reality of today – freezing water pipes breaking, sewage overflowing into our waterways during heavy rains, wells going dry in droughts. On top of that, climate change will bring stronger storms, meaning more water emergencies more often.
In times of a water crisis, communities can fall prey to private water companies. These deep-pocketed corporations see a struggling city and swoop in, offering large sums of money to buy its public water system. Privatization often leads to lower-quality service and higher bills for residents. That's not right.
That’s why Food & Water Action fights against water privatization and champions laws that will help communities repair their water infrastructure and control their water future.
Recently, we stopped a private-equity firm from taking over Pleasantville, New Jersey’s sewer system, and prevented a large water corporation from taking over Bucks County, Pennsylvania’s sewer system in what would have been the largest sewer privatization deal in U.S. history. And we secured over 100 cosponsors for the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability (WATER) Act, legislation that will provide much-needed funds for communities to fix their water systems and keep them public.
Together, we can work to keep our water safe and affordable, ensuring it remains a public resource — not a profit machine for corporations.
