John, yesterday marked 300 days since the conflict in Ukraine erupted. Almost every second of this war, a child from Ukraine has become a refugee. These are a few of their stories:
On February 24, 15-year-old Eva* woke up to the sound of shells exploding. The sounds increased and continued uninterrupted as she and her parents hid in a bathroom. Taking advantage of a five-minute lull, they jumped into their car and drove out of their town under the shelling.
Siblings Sasha,* Dymtrus* and Yuriy,* all under the age of 10, spent 15 long hours in the harrowing cold to cross the border out of Ukraine and into Romania. Our staff welcomed the family into our distribution center, where they received warm socks, food and toys for the children.
13-year-old Olga* and her family faced harrowing conditions as they fled this horrific war. Thanks to your support, she and her younger brothers are now able to find comfort at one of our child-friendly spaces in Poland, where they are safe to be kids again.
Tragically, the war in Ukraine is just one of many ongoing conflicts threatening children’s lives and futures. A staggering 426 million children are currently growing up in conflict zones. There has never been a more important time to stand with and support children affected by conflict and other crises around the world.
