What does GWP’s mission mean to you?
For me, Groundwork’s mission means that the work of organizing, the act of getting things done, to support our communities, to foster institutional change, to fight for social justice and to make a better world doesn’t end. Organizing may take different forms and evolve but we can’t forget the organizers, the advocates, the activists, and the volunteers. We need to support them year-round and long term. Organizers are the roots that nourish democracy.

How and where did you get your start in this work?
I first got started in this work in high school when I was a community activist. I did little things around my community but nothing I thought made a huge impact or changed the outcomes of people’s lives. During my senior year of high school, I was hired as an intern in then-City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley’s office. She was my original inspiration for moving from solely community activism into politics because I saw someone who looked like me actively fighting every day to make a difference in our communities’ lives.

⁂ Your life motto ⁂
“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”

Founded by Joe Kennedy III, Groundwork Project invests in year-round, local community organizing in places Democrats have gotten used to writing off. With a focus on Appalachia, the Deep South, and the Plains, we support local advocates and activists working to build durable political infrastructure and secure power for those historically excluded.
