the situation in the Horn of Africa is part of a global food crisis threatening a record number of people
John,
The United Nations is out with a stunning statistic: Nearly 26 million people in the Horn of Africa face severe hunger, with some regions already at catastrophic famine levels.
Tragically, the situation in the Horn of Africa is part of a global food crisis threatening a record number of people. The estimates are devastating: Almost 345 million people are at acute hunger levels, and nearly 50 million are on the brink of famine.
In a recent message, U.N. Secretary-General summed up the dire situation: “We are on the way to a raging food catastrophe.”
It’s a food crisis of cataclysmic proportions, John. Cracks in the global food system appear to be expanding. The harsh reality is our global food system is ill-prepared for the types of shocks the climate crisis is already inflicting.
Droughts and severe weather decimated crops across the globe in 2022. The United States, Europe, China, Australia, and the Indian subcontinent had decreased yields.
Researchers are sounding the alarm. They forecast so-called “multiple breadbasket” failures will occur more frequently and with greater intensity as the Earth’s atmosphere warms. As a result, the world’s farmers are projected to produce less food in the years ahead. Meanwhile, the global population continues to grow and is on pace to reach 10 billion in the coming decades.
In short, extreme droughts are rapidly becoming the new normal.
John, with Republican climate deniers on the ascendancy in Congress, the work of our SEEC members has never been more critical. We cannot afford to ignore the science or the reality on the ground.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
