For 35 years, the New York Immigration Coalition has organized our communities, using our collective voice to advocate for opportunity and justice.
But over the last few months, we have watched New York become the epicenter of a national political game, wherein tens of thousands of asylum seekers are being treated as pawns - not as people. Many of our new arrivals have been separated from their families, with no way to locate or contact them, and often have little more than the clothes on their backs when they step off the bus at Port Authority.
Thousands more newcomers are expected to arrive in the coming months, and we firmly believe that it is our responsibility as New Yorkers to welcome them into our state and city with dignity and respect, but we cannot hope to achieve this alone.
As we enter the new year, I hope you will continue to follow and support the NYIC as we continue to make strides in the fight for equity and justice for all New Yorkers.
Best regards,
Alana Cantillo Vice President of Advocacy, New York Immigration Coalition
