Dear John,
During World War II, the Christmas Truce of 1914 was a symbol of hope and courage when people of warring countries — Germany and England — laid down their arms and climbed out of their trenches to exchange gifts, play soccer and sing Christmas carols. Today, as the war in Ukraine rages, we reflect on this extraordinary 1914 Christmas Truce to petition President Biden and Congress to call for a Christmas Truce without preconditions to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
Sign our petition for a Christmas Truce in Ukraine leading to a lasting ceasefire and peace negotiations <[link removed]>to guarantee the safety and security of all in Ukraine and Russia.
There is no military solution.
We must stop this war before it escalates further to a world war with the most nuclear-armed nations on earth. To end this nightmare, the U.S. must encourage diplomacy, not send more weapons and military trainers — already estimated to cost U.S. taxpayers $38 billion, with the total cost of the war expected to soon surpass $100 billion. Hurling money at military contractors is not the answer. We hear even the Chair of the Joint Chief of Staff Mark Milley say that there is no military solution. Each battlefield victory triggers retaliation, with neither side capable of achieving their goals through war.
The answer is a Christmas truce to encourage a diplomatic settlement.
