Speaker Pelosi Introduces Massive $1.7 Trillion Spending Bill

Washington Examiner: Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is rallying her fellow Democrats to back the bipartisan $1.7 trillion omnibus spending aimed at averting a government shutdown. Pelosi rattled off a slew of liberal victories in the bill in a letter to House Democrats on Tuesday as House Republicans move aggressively to torpedo the bill in hopes of gaining more negotiating leverage when they retake the lower chamber in January (Washington Examiner). Sen. Mike Lee: This monstrous spending bill comes to 4,155 pages. We deserve proper consideration and the chance to read, debate and amend – not a backroom deal. Opposing this isn’t radical: running our government like this is what’s radical (Twitter). Thomas Massie: Under Nancy Pelosi’s tenure as Speaker of the House, over 40% of the federal debt accumulated since the founding of our country was incurred. No other Speaker, President, or Senate Majority Leader, can even come close to her indubitable record of deficit spending (Twitter). Heritage Foundation: $1 million for Zora’s House in Ohio, a “coworking and community space” for “women and gender-expansive people of color.” $3 million for the American LGBTQ+ Museum in New York City. $3.6 million for a Michelle Obama Trail in Georgia (Twitter).

TikTok Ban Included in Omnibus Bill
Daily Wire: A TikTok ban on government devices is included in the latest version of the $1.7 trillion “omnibus” bill. The Tuesday draft follows the unanimous passage of the “No TikTok on Government Devices Act” in the Senate last week after it was introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO). The concerns over TikTok have existed since at least 2020 as the China-owned social media platform can reportedly be accessed by the nation’s Communist government, making the app a national security issue (Daily Wire). Jake Sherman: The ban on TikTok on government  devices has ended up in the omnibus. This was a Josh Hawley bill. Pelosi pushed for it in the omni (Twitter).

Influx of Texas National Guard Troops Arrive in El Paso to Assist with Border Control
Daily Mail: A huge Texas National Guard presence arrived at the southern border in El Paso overnight as the city prepares for an even larger influx of migrants once Title 42 ends, and asylum-seekers are now forced to come face-to-face with troops if they want to pass into the U.S. New fencing at the banks of the Rio Grande River was also erected to stop migrants from crossing after thousands came across in the last week. Migrants crossing into the U.S. at El Paso are now faced with a stand-off with National Guard troops (Daily Mail). Bill Melugin: The Texas National Guard has deployed to the Rio Grande in El Paso, TX, placing razor wire where migrants have been crossing en masse and establishing a line of humvees. Gov. Abbott sent 400 soldiers to El Paso in anticipation of a “mass migration” event ahead of T42 drop (Twitter). RNC Research: The White House cannot name a single thing Kamala Harris has done to secure the border. “I don’t have anything to lay out specifically on what that work looks like” (Twitter).

Stanford University Reveals List of Banned Words, Among Them is “American”
Shame on you for even thinking you were “American.” Stanford University thinks you are bigoted. Fox News: Stanford University published an index of “harmful language” it plans to eliminate from the school’s websites and computer code, offering terms to be used as replacements… Among the words the university urges people to avoid in the imprecise language section is the term, “American.” People are instead asked to use “U.S. Citizen” because “American” typically refers to “people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas” (Fox News). Nicholas Christakis: What really is amazing about this situation at Stanford is that they willingly convened and *funded* a committee to do this and then promptly lacked courage to defend it by quickly withdrawing list from public availability. If you’re making a list of prohibited words, defend it (Twitter).

Canada Funding Dissemination of Woke Ideology
National Review: Canada’s government granted a group of academics almost $164,000 for a research project called “Decolonizing Light: Tracing and countering colonialism in contemporary physics,” a search of grant records confirmed. Disturbingly, the academics involved admit that they have zero interest in performing science or seeking truth but are instead interested in spreading woke ideology. “The purpose of our project is not to find new or better explanations of light; we are not seeking to improve scientific ‘truth,’” scholars involved in the project wrote in one of their few published works. “Rather, our project initiatives are motivated by the marginalization of women, Black people, and Indigenous peoples particularly in physics” (National Review).

Wells Fargo to Pay $1.7 Billion Penalty in Case of Illegal Fees
Wall Street Journal: Wells Fargo reached a $3.7 billion deal with regulators to resolve allegations that it harmed more than 16 million people with deposit accounts, auto loans and mortgages. The settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau includes a $1.7 billion penalty, the agency’s largest-ever fine, and more than $2 billion in consumer restitution, the regulatory agency said Tuesday. The consumer watchdog agency said the bank illegally assessed fees and interest charges on loans for cars and homes. Some consumers had their vehicles illegally repossessed while others had overdraft fees unlawfully applied, the agency said (Wall Street Journal).

President Zelensky to Visit Capitol Hill to Address Congress
Axios: Capitol Hill is preparing to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a joint session of Congress this week. This would be Zelensky’s first in-person visit to the U.S. since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. While the details are not yet finalized, U.S. Capitol Police is beefing up security for a potential Wednesday visit. Zelensky is expected to thank lawmakers for the billions of dollars in aid they’ve provided to the Ukrainian war effort, as well as to make his case for why even more funding is needed (Axios). Reporter Andrew Desiderio: ZELENSKY COMING TO CAPITOL HILL TOMORROW. It’s the Ukrainian leader’s first visit time leaving Ukraine since Russia’s war began exactly 300 days ago today (Twitter). President Zelensky spent his day touring the front lines in Bakhmut before peaparign to depart for the US (Wall Street Journal).

DHS Lets Slip Cuban Deportees Sought Protection
This is legitimately the worst-case scenario for the migrants. Los Angeles Times: The Department of Homeland Security inadvertently tipped off the Cuban government this month that some of the immigrants the agency sought to deport to the island nation had asked the U.S. for protection from persecution or torture. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are now scrambling to foreclose the possibility that the Cuban government could retaliate against individuals it knows sought protection here. The agency has paused its effort to deport the immigrants in question and is considering releasing them from U.S. custody (Los Angeles Times). Wall Street Journal: Immigration figures show a quarter of a million Cubans have arrived in the U.S. in the past year. Many of them paid thousands of dollars each to get away from the communist island and its crumbling economy, flying to Nicaragua and then paying coyotes, or migrant smugglers, to guide them across Mexico to the U.S. border (Wall Street Journal).
