Being a Member of Congress is about teaching and learning.

As a former law professor, I always say my current job has some real
similarities to my last one.

My job is to learn from my constituents about what problems they’re
facing. I also learn from witnesses during congressional hearings.
Sometimes the information I learn is really valuable, and other times we
learn that they have no business being in a position of power. I’m also
always learning from policy experts as we consider the best way to tackle
big problems.

It’s also my job to teach people about what’s going on in Congress and how
it relates to them. I know that most people don’t watch the news all day
and only tune in if they have a few extra minutes—and that’s why I try to
get my message across quickly and effectively. I aim to show people how
policy made in Washington determines all sorts of things—from access to
abortion to what your prescription will cost.

That brings us to the whiteboard. As a teacher, I’ve spent years using a
whiteboard to break things down, so it was only natural that I brought my
whiteboard to Congress. It’s an effective tool. And it’s fun!

I’m proud to be fighting for families in Congress, but I wouldn’t be here
without your support.

Onward,

Katie Porter
