What makes NLC special? The bonds we create among our Fellows, alumni, and community members like you. These connections - and years of movement building - make an immediate impact and long-term change.
As we shared in the 2022 Annual Report [[link removed]] , NLC builds a movement that goes beyond our organization. The NLC network contributes to a culture of trust, progress, and equity in the industries and issue areas that our alumni touch. The new leaders we train in our annual Institute - and our alumni who collaborate locally after graduating - are setting the tone for our country.
That’s what I’m most thankful for this holiday season: the relationships built in NLC and the ripple effects those connections have in our communities’ non-profits, businesses, and governments. Read more about NLC’s impact in the 2022 Annual Report [[link removed]]

[[link removed]] The bonds we create in NLC aren’t just good for our thousands of individual alumni: they make a real, tangible difference in others' lives. For example, when Houston alumni Beth Matusoff Merfish (NLC Houston ‘15) and Abbie Kamin (NLC Houston ‘16) collaborated in their city government, they expanded equity with a permanent parental policy change. Houston Councilwoman Kamin called on Houston Women's Commission Chair Matusoff Merfish for help to write and pass a leave ordinance for all City workers. They succeeded in securing 12 full weeks of parental leave, plus pre-natal and infant wellness leave for the baby’s first year of life, a policy that impacts 22,000 City employees.
[[link removed]] NLC alumni like Beth and Abbie aren’t alone in their advocacy. In fact, 60% of alumni surveyed have advocated for policy change in their city or state since graduating from their chapter Institute. You can read more about our alumni’s impact in public service, policy, and advocacy in the 2022 Annual Report. [[link removed]]

What we create in our Institutes goes well beyond NLC.
With this in mind, I want to extend a huge thank you to you, friend. Thank you for your commitment to progress, both locally and nationally, and for sharing NLC’s vision for long-term collective impact. Thank you for the relationships you personally invest in for your chapter, those folks you help uplift and develop as new leaders, and the connections you bring into the NLC Family by sharing your NLC story.
Before you log off for the holidays, I have a simple request: Can you share NLC's Annual Report with people in your network? [[link removed]] Whether via email or social media, your words of confidence are your network’s most trusted testimony. And we want as many folks as possible to know the power of NLC. We must continue to build momentum, scale our impact in local communities, and reach more progress-centered leaders.
Change happens at the speed of trust. That’s why the relationships formed within NLC accelerate change in the causes that our alumni champion. It's why we are so grateful you put your trust in the new leaders trained by NLC. We can’t wait to work together in 2023 and beyond.
Have a lovely holiday season,
Clare Bresnahan English
