Team,
On January 6, 2021, President Trump blatantly betrayed his Constitutional duties and committed criminal acts. He desecrated the Constitution and poured gas on the fire of a violent, deliberate attack on our nation's Capitol.
Former President Trump had the power to dissuade the attackers and end the chaos unfolding that day, and he refused to use it. Instead, he used his influence to sanction and encourage the attackers' crimes.
Nearly two years later, the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States has completed its thorough investigation and recommended that the Department of Justice charge former President Trump with four federal crimes.
I enthusiastically support their decision and applaud my colleagues, led by Chairman Benny Thompson and Vice Chair Liz Cheney, for their painstaking work and for pulling back the curtain on the vicious events of that day.
The Select Committee's decision is a victory for the rule of law, but we're not out of the woods yet. Trump is running for President again and his MAGA Republican allies are more emboldened than ever.
Our democracy is still under attack, team. But just as I presided over former President Donald Trump's second impeachment, I will continue to do everything I can to hold all who threaten it accountable.
Thank you,
Rep. Betty McCollum
Member of Congress
