Friends and Supporters,

Through FFI’s National Immigration Detention Hotline ([link removed]) , we’re able to monitor human rights abuses inside detention and connect people to their families and to vital resources. This unique connection also allows FFI to collect stories that capture the inhumane conditions and practices of immigration detention, as well as the data that shows the systemic nature of these issues. One of the ways we utilize this data is by analyzing it and releasing reports that strengthen our fight to abolish detention. As always, your support will help us get there!

In our work with FFI’s national hotline, our team has repeatedly come across an undeniable trend: Of those calling the hotline to report abuse, Black migrants report abuse at disproportionately higher levels, and they report a uniquely vile pattern of anti-Black racism and violence. We decided to investigate further.

Now, after more than a year of collaboration with our partners UndocuBlack Network, the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP), and Black Alliance for Just Immigration, we are excited to share with you our groundbreaking new report, Uncovering the Truth: Violence and Abuse Against Black Migrants in Immigration Detention, which illustrates the pervasive and systemic anti-Black racism inherent to immigration detention.

Drawing on nearly 17,000 call records from FFI’s

National Immigration Detention Hotline spanning a six year period, this major, first-of-its-kind study finally provides quantitative data to validate and affirm the truth that so many detained Black individuals have shed light on over the years.

Some of the key findings of our report include:
* Despite making up only 6% of the total ICE detention population, Black migrants made 28% of all abuse-related reports;
* In some detention facilities in Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana, Black migrants are almost 2x as likely to experience abuse inside detention compared to non-Black migrants;
* Black non-binary migrants are 3.5x more likely to experience abuse in detention;
* A new FOIA request corroborated a previous study that found that 24% of all people in solitary confinement were Black, despite Black migrants accounting for only 4% of the total ICE detention population from 2012-2017;
* Over 53% of the most high-intensity and life-threatening cases that FFI intervened on in the six-year period were on behalf of Black migrants

While these findings may be shocking, they are unfortunately unsurprising. The abuse and dehumanization of Black migrants in immigration detention is no accident. In fact, immigration detention has expanded and further entrenched the racist mass incarceration system, carrying on the U.S. legacy of white supremacy that can be traced back through history—from enslavement, to Jim Crow, to mass incarceration, and now, detention.

Finally, we invite those of all races and ethnicities to engage and grapple with this report and its findings. To reach our shared mission of collective liberation, it will take all of us to root out the racism

and anti-Blackness ingrained in our society.

In Solidarity,
