John,
For decades, the United Nations and environmental groups have tried to get financial institutions to invest in climate solutions. Bringing an end to the climate crisis will take cooperation from both the public and private sectors, and last year it appeared we finally had a breakthrough.
At COP26, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero, or GFANZ, was announced. GFANZ is a coalition of hundreds of financial institutions responsible for over $100 trillion in assets that committed to achieving net-zero emissions together. This was hailed as a huge achievement at the time – but just a year later, Wall Street is already going back on its word.
Earlier this month, Vanguard, one of the largest asset managers in the world, officially announced that it would be pulling out of the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative under GFANZ.
And it’s not just Vanguard, John. Huge firms like JP Morgan, Bank of America, Blackrock, and others are breaking their Net Zero commitments and continuing to invest in fossil fuels. The unfortunate reality is that these institutions care more about their bottom line than the future of our planet.
These firms think they can make bold climate pledges to boost their public perception only to walk them back when people aren’t looking. We can’t keep letting Wall Street get away with these greenwashing tactics. That’s why we’re circulating a petition to call on these firms to maintain their Net Zero commitments. Will you add your name to help hold Wall Street accountable? [[link removed]] [[link removed]]
