Friend,

‘Tis the season of giving . . . to weapons-makers and war profiteers and surveillance contractors.

In the United States—the world’s largest military spender by a morally obscene factor—Christmas cheer always comes early to those who deliver death and destruction under the guise of “national security.”

Meanwhile, in the same omnibus spending package unveiled today on Capitol Hill, you will see no sign of new funding to revive the short-lived expansion of the Child Tax Credit, which reduced poverty among children in the U.S. by more than 40 percent when it was in force between 2020 and last year.

So as the Pentagon is set to receive a mind-boggling $858 billion for missiles, warships, drones, and bombs, we can’t find a measly $12 billion to slash poverty for the nation’s neediest children and their families?

And how do I know about it? Well, I read it at Common Dreams this morning. It’s enough to make you crazy.
But we don’t report news like this to make you crazy. Our goal is to keep you fiercely informed so that we can keep you fiercely determined to keep fighting for a better world.

Nothing happens overnight, and we know the battle is long. But the mission of our independent journalism is to make sure we are always around to shine a light on greed and injustice while lifting up the voices of those—like you—who refuse to stand aside.

If you believe in this mission and want to make sure Common Dreams continues to thrive in 2023, please show that support by contributing to our End-of-Year Campaign today.

Our journalism only exists because of our readers. It’s the only funding model capable of producing such content day after day and year after year. Providing you with news and opinion you can trust—rain or shine, good news or bad—is our commitment 365 days a year.

Please join us now.

In solidarity and on behalf of the entire newsroom staff,
