The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is continuing the Future Proud Michigan Educator (Future PME) initiative with a grant opportunity to develop Grow Your Own (GYO) partnerships between Michigan K-12 districts and educator preparation providers. GYO partnerships will support school staff in receiving initial teacher certification or additional endorsements that meet identified staffing needs of the district, intermediate school district, or public school academy. Grant applications will be available in late December. For more information, please consult the GYO Grant Website, which includes Frequently Asked Questions and a GYO Webinar.
-
Applications must be submitted by Michigan local education agencies (LEAs), public school academies (PSAs), or intermediate school districts (ISDs). Individual employees cannot apply directly for this grant and are encouraged to work with their administrators to identify their interest and eligibility.
-
All applications will require a partnership with one or more approved Michigan educator preparation providers.
This funding opportunity is available through an unprecedented budget passed by the governor and legislature to support the educator workforce. To learn more about educator workforce financial supports, visit the Future PME Grants webpage.
Staffing Permit Change
For the remainder of 2022-23 academic year, the limitation of the Daily Substitute Permit to 90-consecutive calendar days in the same assignment has been waived statewide. Schools may continue placement of individuals working under a Daily Substitute Permit beyond the 90-days in times of emergency or staffing vacancy. For information on what permits can support year-long staffing, review all our permit guidance.
Returning Home for the Holidays
At the end of every year, the holiday season is the perfect occasion to make memories with the people you care about most. Connecting with friends, family, and loved ones makes our hearts full, and inspires us to give. As the holiday season is upon us, we find ourselves gathering with those we hold dear and who have moved away. Wishing your loved one a “Welcome Home” is a great way to spread joy and support Michigan schools. For more information about renewing a Michigan teaching certificate after returning from another state, please visit the Welcome Home Proud Michigan Educator webpage.

Value-Added Student Growth Reports Available for Districts
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has contracted with SAS Institute to provide District and School Value-Added and Student Projection reports. Teacher Value-Added reports are also available to districts and public school academies that provide student-teacher linkages through the Michigan Data Hub (MiDataHub).
Submitting these student-teacher linkages will allow SAS to provide individual teacher reporting. Districts may receive teacher reporting, student enrollment updates, and the standard reports for the 2021-22 school year by following the integration steps to begin the process, and can follow up on their opt-in status by contacting SAS. This reporting includes diagnostic information as well as reliable measures of the academic growth students have made, on average, in the selected grade, subject, or course, which can help educators reflect on past practices and proactively plan for current and future instruction.
For opted-in districts and public school academies, teacher accounts will be created for all teachers receiving reports based on information from MiDataHub. In the 2022-23 school year, SAS will provide Teacher reports based on the 2021-22 state assessments, as well as NWEA MAP, STAR, and i-Ready (if sufficient data is available).
The Promising Practices Exchange is Open for Submissions
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is reminding intermediate school districts (ISDs) and local education agencies (LEAs), both traditional public school districts and public school academies (PSAs), that Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan: Promising Practices Exchange is available for submissions. Educators across the state are implementing strong practices that improve learner outcomes. MDE invites ISDs and LEAs to share their great work on the Promising Practices Exchange so others can learn from them. For more information, view the Promising Practices Exchange Memo.

Saginaw Valley State University Sees Teacher Certification Enrollment Growth and Student Achievement
Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) is seeing gains in the number of students pursuing teacher certification at the university for the fall 2022 semester. The Student Loan Payment Pause Has Been Extended
On November 22, 2022, the U.S. Department of Education announced an extension of the pause on student loan repayment, interest, and collections. The extension will alleviate uncertainty for borrowers as the Biden-Harris Administration asks the Supreme Court to review the lower court orders that are preventing the Department from providing debt relief for tens of millions of Americans. Payments will resume 60 days after the Department is permitted to implement the program or the litigation is resolved, which will give the Supreme Court an opportunity to resolve the case during its current Term. If the program has not been implemented and the litigation has not been resolved by June 30, 2023, payments will resume 60 days thereafter. The Michigan Department of Education is unable to answer questions about student loans. To contact the U.S. Department of Education with questions about the payment pause or student loans, please visit https://studentaid.gov/.

Comprehensive History Instruction Webinar Series January-June 2023
As members of a diverse state, nation, and world, staff and students need to know our rich, complex history. Our children deserve to learn about the full breadth of U.S. and world history. As educators, we have the responsibility to teach them this full breadth of history, including race, racism, sexism, and other difficult and challenging subjects.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) identifies teaching comprehensive history as an important effort supporting Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan. An essential part of MDE’s efforts to improve comprehensive history instruction is to support teachers with opportunities to expand their knowledge to educate students.

Supports Associated with Teacher Retention in Michigan
To alleviate teacher shortages in the state, the Michigan Department of Education has prioritized improving the retention of effective teachers to ensure all students have equitable access to qualified educators. To support this effort, Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest, in partnership with Michigan and the Midwest Alliance to Improve Teacher Preparation, conducted a study that identifies supports implemented by local education agencies that are associated with teacher retention.
