Republicans want to cut Social Security, John. Kevin McCarthy -- who could very well be the next Speaker of the House -- said so himself.
McCarthy said he will leverage debt ceiling negotiations to strongarm the GOP agenda through -- including spending cuts to Social Security. This is a sentiment echoed by other Republican leaders.
Social Security is often called an entitlement -- but it’s not. It’s a program that working Americans pay into with every paycheck. Millions depend on these benefits, including over 1 million South Carolinians and over 150,000 in my district alone. And it’s not just seniors who are counting on Social Security. It’s disabled Americans. Unemployed. Children.
Republicans’ plans put those Americans’ livelihoods at risk, John.
Social Security is one of our most successful programs for lifting people out of poverty. It’s key for making America’s greatness accessible and affordable to all. That’s why protecting and improving Social Security for those who need it is a top priority for Democrats. We’re focused on building an economy that works for everyone -- not just those at the very top.
I want to hear your thoughts about this, John. Do you believe Congress should protect Social Security?
