U.S. jail population increased [ [link removed] ] while prison population decreased in 2021 [ [link removed] ]*

The Bureau of Justice Statistics is announcing the release of statistical tables on "Jail Inmates in 2021" and "Prisoners in 2021". Of note, the two incarcerated populations diverged in 2021, with the number of persons held in local jails increasing by 16% from 2020, while the number of persons in prison decreased 1%. Both populations decreased from 2019 to 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 datasets now available from the National Prisoner Statistics Program and the Annual Survey of Jails*

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released two datasets through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data: National Prisoner Statistics, 1978?2021 and Annual Survey of Jails, 2021.

National Prisoner Statistics, 1978?2021 includes data on the number and characteristics of persons confined in state and federal prison facilities and aggregate data on the race and sex of prisoners, persons held in private facilities and local jails, system capacity, non-U.S. citizens, and persons age 17 or younger.

Annual Survey of Jails, 2021 includes data from a sample of approximately 950 local jails (city, county, regional, and private) nationwide. It provides national estimates on counts of admissions, releases, and staff; demographic characteristics and criminal justice status of the jail population; holds for federal and state prison authorities; and rated capacity of jails.
