This is huge, John: This November, Democrats won full control of Michigan’s state government for the first time in 40 years. This historic victory was a direct result of our movement’s efforts to secure fair maps.
FIRST, in 2018, the NDRC supported the creation of Michigan’s independent redistricting commission – a reform approved by voters to make map drawing fair and nonpartisan.
THEN, in 2021, the commission approved what The New York Times called “one of the fairest” maps in the country. Rather than favoring one party over the other, the new maps favored the winner of Michigan’s statewide vote.
SO, in 2022, when the NDRC supported Democracy Defenders running across Michigan, these candidates were able to compete on fair maps. And – thanks to your grassroots support – many of them won.
NOW, we’re continuing our work to secure fair maps, protect voting rights, and defend democracy in more states across the country. Will you pitch in to help nationwide?

As Attorney General Eric Holder has said, “Wherever Democrats can fairly compete, they can win.” Our work in states like Michigan proves exactly that.
But in states like Wisconsin and Florida, districts are still unfairly gerrymandered, and Republicans have signaled that they intend to keep fighting to manipulate maps. That’s why we must continue fighting back and executing our proven strategy – state by state, and across the country.
