** A Message From Governor Ivey

Fellow Alabamians,
December 14th marked Alabama’s 203rd year of statehood! I am grateful I have had the honor of serving as the 54th governor of Alabama for more than five of those years, and I look forward to serving the great citizens of this state for a second term. Our state has a storied history of highs and lows, but our tenacity and heart are what drives people to visit and live here. When I travel across the state, I get to meet so many genuine folks and see the issues and successes our people are experiencing firsthand.
Last week, I welcomed 36 new legislators to the state house for their orientation. The first thing I told them is to never lose sight of the fact that they were elected by the people to serve the people, not themselves. I also shared the importance of each of us, working across party lines, to get the job done. I am very proud of the progress we have made during the past five years through bipartisanship, but that doesn’t mean I’m satisfied or that we can slow down now. We have several major issues to address including improving our education efforts, increasing broadband accessibility, strengthening public safety, allocating the second round of ARPA monies, and reauthorizing economic development incentive laws for future business growth, among others. I will lay out more of my administration’s plans to keep Alabama growing during my inauguration on January 16 and during my state of the state address on March 7, which will kick off the 2023 legislative session. I hope you will tune in!
If you are not ready for Christmas quite yet, this colder weather is going to at least make it feel like the right season. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” That verse – so simple and true – remains my personal favorite to recall each year. It reminds us that we can have hope in Him and in His promise. That, my friends, is the greatest gift of all.

Christmas is a time of giving, reflecting and holding our loved ones close. However, there is a special group of people that are not able to be home with their families and that is because they have selflessly put their country first. Our service members and their families deserve the highest praise for the sacrifices they make for the prosperity of our nation. We recently held our annual Wreaths Across America program in the Alabama State Capitol to recognize those that died in service. As you pass by cemeteries this month, you may notice Christmas wreaths are placed by the graves of our fallen heroes. Take a moment to stop at one of them, share a moment of silence and show your gratitude. I also want to thank the countless volunteers that host programs to keep the memories of the fallen at the forefront of this season.

Proclamation Spotlight: National Mentoring Month
I have proudly proclaimed January as National Mentoring Month ([link removed]) in Alabama. Mentoring is such a wonderful way to help a young person find their way in this world. During this month, I hope more Alabamians will take on this shared responsibility of helping to teach our young people life skills through after school programs and extracurricular activities. Simply offering someone an ear can make all the difference.
