Friends:

So far, the cholera outbreak in Haiti has tragically been most dangerous for children under five-years-old. There are many medical and social reasons why this is true, but one obvious one is malnutrition.

* Malnutrition compromises a small child’s immune system leaving them to face cholera without their natural defenses.
* Before the current economic and political crisis, at least 1 in 5 children in Haiti was already malnourished. That number has grown after months of food shortages and income loss.
* The result is heartbreaking: Children under five have been the hardest hit throughout this outbreak.

The good news is that we can make an immediate difference on three fronts at once: By treating children who are currently sick in the cholera treatment units we’re currently building, vaccinating as many people as possible with newly arrived vaccines, and surging our malnutrition care so that every child we can reach has the nutritious food they need to grow big and strong.

PIH uses a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) called Nourimanba to cure even acute malnutrition. Nourimanba is made by PIH in Haiti using peanuts grown by local farmers, and it provides all the nutrients a growing child needs in just a few spoonfuls.

There is no time to waste. Please consider making a donation to provide lifesaving health care in Haiti. Your donation will be matched by a group of generous donors.
