Hi John,

I hope this email finds you well. As the year draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the many recent advances our LGBTIQ communities have achieved around the world, and how important it is to amplify that progress is happening.

In the Dutch Caribbean, the Joint Court of Justice ruled that same-sex partners in Aruba and Curaçao must be allowed to marry each other. Singapore’s parliament decriminalized sex between men. In Mexico, all couples gained the right to be married regardless of sexual orientation. And in the US, the landmark Respect for Marriage Act was signed.

These monumental steps forward, and the hard work of activists who helped achieve these milestones, deserve to be resoundingly amplified and fully celebrated.

Yet, we must also loudly amplify the continued struggles and voices of too many LGBTIQ people around the world that endure violence and discrimination. This year alone, we’ve seen a dangerous backlash on the rise, including arrests, shutdowns of LGBTIQ organizations, and anti-LGBTIQ laws proposed in places like Afghanistan, China, Ghana, Honduras, Hungary, Iraq, Malaysia, Poland, Uganda.

“From now on anytime we want to be able to find you, we will. And we will do whatever we want with you,” a lesbian said that after the Taliban takeover, her male relatives joined the Taliban and threatened to kill her because of her sexual orientation. This is but one story Outright learned about in researching and publishing our January 2022 report, “Even If You Go to the Skies, We’ll Find You.” 

John, we all need to listen to LGBTIQ activists on the front lines. From Afghans and Ghanian people under attack for who they are or love and Ukrainian activists helping their communities during the war, to Caribbean activists fighting to overturn colonial-era laws banning same-sex relations, Outright amplifies their voices so they can be heard.
