| Thank you to everyone who registered for our online Helen R. Weigle Policy Forum on economic supports for low- and moderate-income families. We had a great conversation, moderated by CAFC President Dr. Tasha Green Cruzat, that included discussion about the federal child tax credit, state child tax credits, income inequality, and housing supports. Our thanks to Illinois State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. , Dr. Valerie Wilson of the Economic Policy Institute, and Dr. Christopher Wimer of Columbia University for joining us. If you were not able to join us for the event, you can still view it on our YouTube channel by clicking here.
| Congress is still working on a year-end budget deal to fund the federal government that we hope will include changes to the federal child tax credit. Last week, the President signed a one-week funding measure to keep the government running through December 23rd while members of Congress try to work out the final details of a budget. The one-year changes to the federal child tax credit that Congress approved for 2021 lifted millions of children out of poverty. However, many of them will be unable to access the full value of the credit going forward unless Congress amends the current law. It's important that you contact our elected officials in Washington, D.C., to let them know that you support such a change. The Coalition on Human Needs has set up an online letter you can access, modify, and send to members of Congress. Just click here to view the letter.
