Positive abortion news from 2022!
The reversal of Roe Vs Wade in the US took up a lot of headlines this year, and we stand in solidarity with those fighting to reclaim and progress reproductive rights in the States. We continue to speak with global partners about the repercussions this move has had on their own work. However, for the end of year newsletter we always like to share good news about abortion rights and access...
------------------------------------------------------------
In February, Colombia decriminalised abortion ([link removed]) , meaning it is now available on request up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. SAAF grantee partner Si Mujer ([link removed]) continues to work to ensure this very progressive legal change is recognised in the healthcare system, and understood by women and pregnant people all over the country.
------------------------------------------------------------
In Mexico, a number of states have voted to liberalise abortion on request up to 12 weeks. In October, Quintana Roo ([link removed]) became the 11th state in the country to do so.
------------------------------------------------------------
This year, Thailand continued to liberalise its abortion law, extending access to 20 weeks. SAAF grantee partner Tamtang Group ([link removed]) continues to advocate for full decriminalisation of abortion ([link removed]) , and for consistent implementation of the law across the country.
------------------------------------------------------------
In Sierra Leone, SAAF grantee partner WHRRO ([link removed]) has been part of an advocacy push to legalise abortion ([link removed]) and in July the President committed to support the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Act.
------------------------------------------------------------
And many European countries have extended legal protections for abortion access this year - for example, Germany ([link removed]) , France ([link removed]) , The Netherlands ([link removed]) , and Finland ([link removed]) . Yay!
We've seen a lot of change this year...
Thanks to ongoing input and feedback from the organisations we fund, SAAF has a new and improved approach to grant-making which we put into practice this year.
We hired independent consultants to undertake a full review of our grant-making process. Applying a feminist and anti-racist lens, they interviewed 42 individuals from our partner organisations and staff team.
We were pleased to see that grantee partners considered SAAF to be "flexible, accountable and consultative" and have taken on board suggestions to improve our work further. For example, we have removed the need for organisations to report on set targets, and have moved to online application and reporting forms to reduce administrative burden.
You can read more about the changes we've made and why in our latest Annual Report

We started funding 87 organisations this year
This year we launched our sixth round of funding, and are pleased to be able to fund a total of 87 organisations, covering 52+ countries around the world.
We're delighted to be able to continue funding existing grantee partners, who have received funding from SAAF for many years, as well as welcoming new organisations. All of these new partners were invited to inception workshops so we could get to know each other and share global good practices.
You can find out more about the organisations we are currently supporting by checking out our website ([link removed]) (which is in English, French and Spanish).
