Great news, John –
Thanks to Gale’s hard work and advocacy, the Dignity for Incarcerated Primary Caretaker & Parents Act was JUST signed into law by NJ Governor Phil Murphy! Now, incarcerated parents and primary caretakers will be sentenced to serve terms in facilities closer to their children, making it possible to remain as active a parent as possible from behind bars.
Last year we talked about passing 20 Dignity bills in 20 states. Thanks to New Jersey Dignity Ambassador Gale Muhammad, we’re now more than halfway to our goal.

We fought for more than two years to pass this bill in New Jersey. The new law will help close the intergenerational cycle of incarceration by keeping families closer together. The fight to end the incarceration of women and girls is ongoing, but as Gale puts it, every step along the way makes a big difference.
“Families impacted by the criminal justice system deserve accessible visitation rights, meaningful resources, and compassionate guards that can facilitate visits. These new policies will be key to helping women and families impacted by mass incarceration receive the adequate resources for a successful transition to nu-entry.”
We hope you’ll join us in spreading this joyful news for incarcerated parents, children, caretakers, and the ones they love in New Jersey.
