Let’s focus on what really matters You are receiving this email as one of Alexandra’s most engaged followers. Hi John, Well . . . as predicted, people and the media are eager to dumb me down and brand me as the “former stripper” because one of the jobs I held in college was in sex work: I’ve been very clear that I’m not embarrassed about who I am and what I’ve done in my life— when it comes to sex work, or any of the jobs I worked to pay for my education and student loans. And I’ll put my two masters, my research articles, and my hard work up against anyone who says I’m not smart enough or good enough. I’m a soccer coach. A public health researcher. A former candidate for Congress. An advocate for the people of Philadelphia. But you don’t see that in the media. I’m tired of having to justify my entire existence—because the media gets more clicks when they erase all the details about me except that part-time job I held in college. 22 members of the U.S. House of Representatives—that’s 6% of them—don’t have college degrees. And that’s completely fine; a college degree isn’t required to be smart or to be good at what you do. Life experience matters a lot when it comes to governance. But have you ever seen an article saying these Representatives can’t read? Does every article mention that they didn’t graduate from college? How many elected officials only have a J.D.? Would a lawyer get slammed for a part-time job they held 20 years ago? . . . Of course not. But the data scientist? . . . apparently I’m fair game. It’s just gotten ludicrous. I’m so grateful to all of you for doing what the media won’t—taking my message seriously, sharing my policies to so many people, and supporting my campaign because of the big picture, rather than one detail about my past. With your help, we’ve proven that a successful campaign doesn’t have to rely on the media to do the hard work. We’re powered by everyday folks from all walks of life; people just like you — not the media — pitching in what they can from emails like this. The stripper-shaming isn’t going to stop, so we have to keep fighting. Can you support our campaign today to show that we can focus on what really matters even when the media won’t? And together, we can show everyone that political dialogue (even on Twitter) that's free from toxic misogynist click-bait is possible. I'm so grateful to all of you.
