A New Year. A New Legislative Session!
|
House Speaker KC Becker and Senate President Leroy Garcia convene over the opening of the 2020 Legislative Session.
|
On Wednesday, the Colorado General Assembly reconvened for another exciting legislative session! With a historically productive and rewarding 2019 session in the rear-view mirror, Democrats now look ahead to the 2020 legislative session that is primed with opportunity to continue to move our state forward. Last session, Colorado Democrats passed a number of good bills that Republicans had blocked in the state Senate for years. We saw Colorado Democrats pass:
- Innovative legislation to save Coloradans money on healthcare like a first-in-the-nation insulin cost cap and reinsurance.
- Bills to expand LGBTQ equality like banning conversion therapy and making it easier for transgender Coloradans to update the gender on their birth certificates.
- Historic investments in our state's affordable housing, in addition to legislation that will generate millions more for affordable housing.
- The Equal Pay for Equal Work Act which will ensures that Colorado women are paid the same as their men counterparts.
- Full-day kindergarten for every Colorado child!
- Legislation to tackle the existential crisis of climate change like investing in green jobs, renewable energy, and zero-emissions vehicles and buildings.
- Bills to expand access to the ballot box and to protect our democracy by getting dark money out of our politics here in Colorado.
This is just a small sample of some of the amazing progress our state has made under the leadership of Democrats in the Colorado General Assembly. We're confident that they'll continue to govern wisely and do the people's work for Colorado.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis delivered his second State of the State address Thursday to a Legislature in the control of his fellow Democrats. Not only did he declare that Colorado is strong, but he said it’s also “forward-thinking. It is dynamic. It is bold. And it is courageous.”
All of the other trappings of a typical Polis speech were also in place. You can be assured there was a mention of his blue sneakers and a geeky reference in the form of a quote from the “Lord of the Rings.”
"'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us,'" Polis told lawmakers, quoting the wizard Gandalf's advice as he urged his colleagues to make the most of their term-limited tenures.

Bad Press Week for Cory Gardner
|
Cory Gardner, facing impeachment questions from all sides, is mum as the Senate looks ahead
From the Denver Post.
Gardner’s silence dates back months. His public appearances, never numerous in 2019, were rarer still this fall. He has avoided conservative talk radio, once a political safe space, along with most news media. His office agreed to arrange an interview with The Denver Post in Washington, D.C., during the House impeachment process, but later said he was unavailable and instead emailed a statement criticizing that process.
...
The last time the senator spoke with a significant contingent of Colorado reporters was Oct. 10, when he made national headlines for refusing to say whether it’s inappropriate for an American president to ask a foreign government to investigate a political rival. Gardner declined to answer the question a dozen times that day.
...
“Instead of ensuring the facts get a fair hearing, Senator Gardner is enabling Mitch McConnell’s partisan coverup while ignoring the rule of law,” said Morgan Carroll, chair of the Colorado Democratic Party.
“Senator Gardner has already compromised his impartiality by taking campaign cash from the defendant, but allowing President Trump to hide critical documents and block testimony from key witnesses would show yet again that Gardner puts his loyalty to the president ahead of getting the truth and doing his job for the people of Colorado.”

Sen. Gardner On Pelosi’s Impeachment Delay: ‘I Mean, She Doesn’t Seem To Care’
From CPR News
In a rare moment for the senator, who has generally avoided reporters in recent months, Gardner took questions from the press before a Senate vote Monday evening.
As he waited for an elevator to take him up to the floor of the Senate chamber, with an ever-growing group of reporters standing by, Gardner would not say whether he wants to hear from top Trump Administration officials during a Senate impeachment trial.

On impeachment, pressure on Colorado senator is from right
From the AP.
Gardner’s posture is one sign of the limits of that strategy. While the Democrats and Republicans battle over how and when to try the president for high crimes and misdemeanors, Gardner and several other GOP senators in tight races this year have shown little inclination to risk the wrath of Trump supporters at home.
It’s a political calculation that values loyalty to Trump and his base over any bipartisan appeal. And it’s one measure of the grip Trump has over the party.
...
Gardner has carefully limited his statements on impeachment, sparking headlines in October when he refused to say that a politician should not solicit foreign help in an election. The dodge includes a defense of the president, suggesting Trump is the victim of partisanship.

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?
Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!
If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here's a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:
- The CDP is the central base that supports volunteer recruitment, training candidates, and helping county parties win elections. While the Democratic National Committee provides some limited funds, the reality is it is up to us to raise our own money so we can support Democratic candidates running for office in Colorado.
- We knock on doors and meet with voters to talk about voting Democratic even before we know who our nominees are! As part of the High Fivers Club, you can help us get supplies for volunteers so we can knock on 50,000 more doors before we know our nominee.
- Once we have our nominee, we'll use what we've learned about voters to help them jump-start their Get Out the Voter efforts and stay toe-to-toe with Donald Trump and the Republicans.
