An essential part of safeguarding our democracy is ensuring that our elections run smoothly. That requires proper funding. If jurisdictions fail to keep up with the ongoing costs of elections, it can result in using outdated equipment, inadequate training, and accessibility issues, threatening the safety and security of our election system.

Sign the petition to Congress: Provide election funding before January.

Federal funding for elections over the past two decades has been woefully insufficient. The last significant federal elections law, the Help America Vote Act, was passed in 2002 after the turbulent 2000 election. Although there have been occasional grants since then, they don’t come near the increasing costs required to replace outdated election infrastructure and ensure election departments are fully staffed and resourced. One conservative estimate puts the costs of federal elections at $2 billion, which could increase to $5 billion in the coming years.

If we hope to keep the integrity of elections intact, we need better and more reliable funding. With the 2024 election coming at us fast, and Republican election deniers taking over control of the House in January, now is the time to ensure our elections are properly funded.
