[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Time is running out for this legislative session to secure our democracy and elections before House Republicans take the majority in January.

In the past two years, extreme Republicans’ have doubled down on conspiracies and a willingness to subvert free and fair elections. And with Donald Trump already running for president, we need to make sure they cannot attempt another coup after the 2024 election.

That’s where our bipartisan Electoral Count Reform Act comes in. This bipartisan bill, which I helped write, will clarify the ambiguities and strengthen the weaknesses in the original 1887 law, and I need your help to ensure it gets a vote.

Will you add your name to say you want to see Congress pass the Electoral Count Reform Act and secure our democracy? The plan is to add it as an amendment to our must-pass omnibus spending package, but we need to keep the pressure on my colleagues.

We won a lot of critical races this November to stop election deniers — including both gubernatorial races in Arizona and Pennsylvania. But we cannot take anything for granted because Republicans could come back and try even harder if we beat them in 2024.

So here’s what this bill does:

First, it would make sure that every state correctly certifies election results by creating an expedited new court process to stop fraud if a state government attempts to ignore the will of the voters by sending more than one set of results, or none at all.

Next, this bill makes it harder for members of Congress to object to the certified results submitted by a state. Right now, it only takes one Senator and House member with a conspiracy theory to force a vote. The new threshold is 20 percent of members of the House and Senate.

The bill also removes an ambiguous provision in the 1887 law that Trump argued allows state legislatures to appoint their own electors if they judged there to be fraud in the election. Now, states won't be able to change the rules of how electors are chosen after the election.

Finally, this bill makes clear the Vice President's role is just ceremonial. Trump's hail mary play — the Vice President blocking certification — is no longer even a remote possibility.

I’m proud to be part of the bipartisan effort of 16 senators who put forth this bill, but our efforts cannot be in vain. We need your help to get this across the finish line.

Please add your name to tell Congress to pass the Electoral Count Reform Act before our session ends. This is a critical first step toward fixing what ails our democracy today.

This bill isn't a comprehensive attempt to reform our elections. Yes, we have much more to do to secure elections and make sure everyone can vote.

But this bill does make sure that presidential elections can't be stolen through manipulation of the electoral count process. It will meaningfully constrain bad actors at the federal and state level who are trying to steal elections, and we cannot miss this opportunity to pass it.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
