** A WORD ABOUT INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY
------------------------------------------------------------

In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared December 18^th of each year International Migrants Day due to the ever-increasing number of migrants worldwide. December 18^th marks the day to recognize the contributions of migrants and the need to protect and defend their rights. At the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), we honor the contributions of migrants each and every day.

As we all observe International Migrants Day, we reflect upon the challenges and difficulties faced by more than 280 million migrants worldwide ([link removed]) . The reality of migration is more than just starting over. Migrants travel in search of security and opportunities that will allow them to reinvent themselves. Others are escaping from discrimination and prejudice. It is never an easy decision to leave home, especially when the journey ahead is perilous and, at times, fatal.

Migrations are either voluntary or forced movements resulting from the increased magnitude and frequency of disasters, economic challenges, persecution, genocide, extreme poverty, and deadly conflicts. Governments must acknowledge the reality of the powerful economic, social, and political forces driving historic human migration.

USCRI is at the forefront of organizations working to protect and serve migrants worldwide. In fiscal year 2022 alone, our network resettled 10,200 Afghan arrivals under the Afghan Placement and Assistance (APA) program. Our Refugee Health Services program provided medical services to more than 90,000 Afghan Evacuees during that same period. These services include obstetrics, labor and delivery, surgical interventions for acute and chronic conditions, orthopedics, specialty cardiology, pediatric and rehabilitative services, and COVID testing and vaccinations.

We also served more than 2,400 survivors of human trafficking last year and helped hundreds of girls ages 10-17 at our Rinconcito del Sol shelter in Florida. We also opened six new Legal Services offices and served more than 1,000 legal clients.

We were able to do this thanks to you and other generous supporters—supporters who know that migrants contribute to our communities with their knowledge, networks, and skills We see the need—and you do too. You make these striking differences in human lives possible through your partnership with USCRI. Your contributions multipl ([link removed]) y ([link removed]) the benefits and services available to people made vulnerable through no fault of their own.
