Dear John,
Today some politicians are more willing than ever to publicly threaten seniors’ earned benefits with harmful cuts. One recent example, U.S. Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) answered “hell no” when asked if he would support legislation to avoid a government default that didn’t cut Social Security and Medicare — programs he called “garbage.”
It’s clear opponents of Social Security believe they now have the best opportunity in years to slash seniors’ earned benefits. And they’re ramping up their rhetoric — promoting myths and outright lies — against this popular and effective program to try to convince you that this Social Security is “bankrupt” … or “going broke” … and “must be cut.”
That’s why a big part of our work here at the National Committee is setting the record straight on Social Security — and your earned benefits. And last week I was pleased to join with the nation’s leading Social Security experts at a forum presented by the Harkin Institute at Drake University and moderated by former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (who also chairs the National Committee’s Advisory Board).
During the forum I was asked to help debunk several harmful myths about Social Security which have undermined public perceptions of this critical program over the years, including falsehoods promoted by some GOP politicians who are fundamentally opposed to Social Security.
These and other ridiculous claims about Social Security are being resurrected right now by GOP lawmakers in Congress who are determined to use their power in the new Congress to slash seniors’ earned benefits.
With your support, the National Committee will fight to set the record straight about Social Security and press the new Congress to act to protect and strengthen — not cut — Social Security. Help us stop cuts to your earned benefits!
Sincerely,
|
