John,
Some cautiously good news on the deforestation of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest:
According to just-released government data, deforestation fell in the 12 months through July. That’s a decrease from a 15-year high under the outgoing President, Jair Bolsonaro.
The report, prepared by the Brazilian space research agency INPE, highlighted a deforestation decline of 11 percent from a year earlier . The agency data calculates that deforestation damages 4,466 square miles of Brazil’s rainforest.
As the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon absorbs massive quantities of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere through deforestation. There’s a reason why the Amazon has been called “Earth’s lungs.” Forest destruction is Brazil’s most significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.
The INPE report states it is impossible to determine immediately why deforestation immediately declined over the 12 months. The report speculates maybe the weather or economic cycles could be a factor.
The news is not all good; however, John .
Despite the encouraging decline, there was still more deforestation than in any year from 2009 to 2020.
While we’re making progress on holding companies accountable for driving the deforestation in the Amazon, John, we still have work to do. We cannot allow 2022 to be an acceptable new normal.
